Achieving Knowledge Transfer Through Business Intelligence Training

As part of a larger Packaged ERP Analytics project, Humana’s goal was to achieve Level 1 knowledge transfer from the KPI Partners project team to members of Humana’s internal business intelligence team.

To accomplish this goal, three Humana team members were identified: two data integration resources and one dashboards & reports resource.  A Level 1 proficiency was agreed to be a realistic and achievable goal as these resources had no prior data warehousing or business intelligence background.

Humana’s data integration resources attended the following KPI University courses:

  • 321: Oracle BI Server
  • 340: Oracle BI Analysis & Dashboards
  • 414: Informatica ETL (Extract-Transform-Load)
  • 416: Data Warehouse Administration Console (DAC)

The Humana team was responsible for the following tasks with assistance and documentation from KPI Partner’s on-site project team:

  • Installation of the QA and production environments
  • Development/Quality Assurance/Production code migration
  • Running the ETL process during QA.

For Oracle Essbase, the Humana team attended five days of Essbase training, 1 day of Web Analysis and 1 day of Hyperion Financial Reporting. The Humana team was responsible for setting up the QA and production environments as well as code migration between environments.

At the end of the project, the Humana team began providing production support and minor enhancements in accordance with Humana’s goal of Level 1 proficiency. Humana’s strategy is to utilize external consulting resources for large BI Application projects move to Level 2 proficiency over a period of time.
