Data Sharing in Snowflake: How It Works & Benefits

Written by KPI Partners | Oct 19, 2026, 12:00:36 PM

Key takeaways:

  • Snowflake data sharing gives partners live access to your data without copying or moving it, so everyone works from the same current version.
  • You now have three ways to share: Direct shares for known partners, listings and the Snowflake Marketplace for reach and even revenue, and data clean rooms for privacy-safe collaboration.
  • Sharing now spans regions and clouds automatically, so reach is no longer a constraint.

For most organizations, data is more valuable when it is shared, with partners, suppliers, customers, and teams across the business. The traditional way of sharing it, though, is slow and costly. Snowflake data sharing takes a different approach: It gives another party live access to your data without copying or moving anything, so both sides always work from the same current version. For a business weighing how to exchange data safely and quickly, it is one of Snowflake's most valuable capabilities. Here is what it offers and what to keep in mind.

What Makes Snowflake Sharing Different

The old way of sharing data means extracting it, encrypting it, moving it over File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or an application programming interface (API), and having the other side load it before they can use it. Every copy is out of date the moment it is made, and every step adds cost and effort. Snowflake sharing removes the movement entirely. The data stays in the provider's account, and the consumer queries it directly and securely. Because nothing is copied, the shared data is always current, the provider pays only for their own storage, and the consumer pays only for the compute they use to query it. No duplicate datasets, no sync jobs, no waiting.

Three Ways to Share, and How to Pick

Snowflake now gives you three ways to share, suited to different goals.

  • Direct shares are the simplest: You give a specific, known partner live access to selected tables or views. This is ideal for established relationships such as a supplier or a subsidiary.
  • Listings and the Snowflake Marketplace package your data as a product. Private listings reach specific consumers, while public listings on the Marketplace let any Snowflake customer discover your data, and you can even offer it on a paid or subscription basis. Listings also give you usage metrics on who is consuming what.
  • Data clean rooms let two parties collaborate on sensitive data without either side exposing the underlying records, which suits privacy-regulated work in areas such as advertising, financial services, and healthcare.

A quick rule of thumb: Use direct shares for known partners, listings for reach and monetization, and clean rooms when privacy has to be preserved.

Reach Any Region or Cloud

Data sharing used to be limited to accounts in the same region, which meant manual replication to reach anyone else. That constraint is gone. With cross-cloud auto-fulfillment, a provider can share across regions and across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud without managing replication by hand. Your consumers get access wherever they are, and reach is no longer a reason to hold back.

What to Keep in Mind

A few practical points help set expectations:

  • Shared data is read-only. Consumers can query it but cannot change it or build objects on it, which keeps the provider in control.
  • Non-Snowflake partners can still consume data through reader accounts, so a consumer does not have to be a Snowflake customer to receive a share.
  • Your governance travels with the share. Masking and row access policies continue to apply, so partners see only what they are meant to.
  • Shared databases cannot be re-shared, which prevents your data from moving on without your knowledge.

Turning Data Sharing into Advantage

Handled well, data sharing turns your data into a live asset you can extend to partners, monetize, or collaborate on safely. As a Snowflake partner, KPI Partners helps organizations design sharing and collaboration models that are secure, governed, and built around real business outcomes. When sharing is part of a move onto Snowflake, our Data Platform Migration Accelerator sets up the foundation, so these capabilities are ready from day one.
