What is Databricks Genie?

Genie lets business users ask questions of their data in plain language and get answers grounded in governed data. Genie Agents, formerly Genie spaces, are curated for one topic or domain, and Genie One brings chat across agents, dashboards, and metric views into one interface. Both are powered by Genie Ontology, a context layer that learns your business from your data, dashboards, queries, and connected apps.

Why not just point Genie at our tables?

Genie Ontology, now in preview, learns context automatically and ranks which definitions look most authoritative. It can only rank what already exists, though: When a measure means different things to different teams and none is certified, an agent can still pick the wrong one, and trust erodes on the first wrong number. We start with governed metric views, glossary terms, and domains in Unity Catalog, curated context for each domain, and answers tested before go-live.

Do we need to replace our BI tools to use Genie?

No. Genie works on your governed Databricks data alongside the tools you use today. When you are ready to modernize a legacy BI estate, we move it onto Databricks AI/BI dashboards and Genie, keeping curated reports and turning ad hoc questions into conversations.

How do we know Genie's answers are correct?

We build an evaluation set of questions with known-correct answers, often harvested from your existing reports, and the agent must pass it before go-live and again on every change. A wrong or flagged answer is corrected in the model, the context, and the tests, so it cannot recur.

Can Genie work with our other AI agents?

Yes. For low-code agents, Databricks recommends Genie Agents, and to coordinate several agents in code, the Agent Bricks command-line tools can add Genie Agents as tools alongside other agents and functions. Every answer stays scoped to what each user is allowed to see.
