BI Supports Launch of the World's Largest Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean is one of the largest cruise ship companies in the world with 20 ships with a total capacity of over 50,000 passengers, including the world’s largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Sea. In 2009, Royal Caribbean will visit 251 ports, in 76 countries, on 6 continents. Royal Caribbean had 2008 revenue of $5.8 billion and over 49,000 employees.

Royal Caribbean needed to increase the sales of high margin products such as alcoholic beverages. To do this, Royal Caribbean needed to identify the affinities of different age groups from different countries for different beverages. In addition, customers spend at different venues such as pool bars, restaurants, etc. can be compared to historical trends to ensure that menu selections are meeting customer needs.

KPI’s team worked with Royal Caribbean to design the data warehouse data model, create Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) metadata, reports and dashboards. This work was done using KPI’s OBIEE Quick Start methodology in 6 weeks! The result was an industry leading BI application that provided critical business insight into the operations of the world’s largest cruise ship.
